Because life is uncertain and "we know not what a day will bring forth" (Prov, 27:1), or "what will happen tomorrow" (James 4:13), we are tempted to become anxious about the future.
A. The effects of anxiety concerning the future.
1. "Do not worry (merimnao, be distracted) about tomorrow" (6:34). Worry about tomorrow's troubles can distract us from today's opportunities and blessings. "His compassions fail not. They are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:23).
2. Philippians 4:6-7 "Be anxious (merimnao) for nothing...let your requests be made know to God; and the peace of God...will guard your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus". Anxiety about tomorrow can rob us of God's peace today.
B. The prevention of anxiety about the future.
1. "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things (our material needs) shall be added to you" (6:33). "my God shall supply all your needs...by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
2. "let your requests be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6).
3. "Casting all you care (Merimnao) on Him, for He cares for you" (I Peter 5:7).
