“A New Commandment”
1 John 2:1-11
A. The “old” commandment.
1 John 2:7 “..an old commandment which you have had from the
beginning.”
Matthew 22:35-40 “..you shall love the Lord you God with all your
heart....you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
B. The “new” commandment.
1 John 2:8 “Again, a new commandment I write to you..”
John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love
one another as I have loved you..”
Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the
church and gave Himself for it.”
C. The source of this kind of love.
Romans 5:5 “...the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love...”
1 Corinthians 13:4 “Love suffers long and is kind..”
D. The consequences:
1. Of obeying the “new” commandment.
1 John 2:10 “He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there
is no cause for stumbling in him.”
2. Of not obeying the “new” commandment.
1 John 2:11 “He who hates his brother is in darkness, and does not
know where he is going..”
